The word psychic is a Greek word that means one who can see into the future. It therefore follows that Greeks were among the first people among who psychic cultures existed. Modern science has called their improved perception ability extrasensory perception (ESP) rather than use the explanation of magic that was common among these early psychic cultures. Various performers to influence the world physically through telekinetic powers have used these abilities. Psychics have also featured greatly in fiction movies a fact that has made many people dismiss them as fictional stories.

Astrology

This is perhaps the most ancient display o psychic abilities. Astrologers told people’s future fortunes by observation of celestial bodies and interpretation of their meanings. People knew them as prophets and documented them in various religious writings like the bible and others. They served a variety of purposes in the early civilizations society. They were priests, judges and advisors. One of the most famous astrologers was a French national known as Nostradamus whose predictions during the French renaissance period all came true. His prophesies include calamities such as wars, plagues, earthquakes and others. However, his predictions did not have a particular timeline a fact that makes many critics argue that they were merely misconceptions and misinterpretations of facts.

Psychic cultures in the 19th century

Edgar Cayce was among the most influential seer of this period. It was also around this time that spiritualism was spreading fast across the world. Their belief was that spirits of the dead are contactable through mediums. They were able to see smell and talk to them. By the time the 20th century came, psychics were wide spread and there were even advertisements of their services. Businesspeople and private individuals consulted them before making any major decision. They were able to tell the consequences o these decisions in the future.

Modern day belief in psychic culture

Few people believe in extra sensory perception today especially due to the advances of technology and studies. People have come to rely on machines for information on future happenings. Among the greatest contributors to the loss of faith in physics is that many fake ones have come up and are swindling money off individuals. Among the most avid critics are neural scientists who see no connection between the nerves used for perception and the physical stimuli of the future. They have even recommended that practice of this culture become illegal.

Sociologists are still involved in research on these abilities and from time to time will get scientists involved in their work. Currently, researchers find that there is no sufficient evidence to justify the claim that psychics do exist and all that people do is believe without questioning.
